Furniture

This past Summer we had a booth at our local farmers market. We wanted to meet our community and let them meet us, we even brought the boys to a few. The only item we had that could be considered furniture was a planter bench. But we told everyone we did custom work and that included furniture.

We met one family that were victims of a house fire. We originally started talking about shelves for their daughters room. But one weekend the wife, we will call her Sam, brought me a picture of a spinning chair. She had a spinning wheel but no chair. She had three main requests – it had to be walnut to match her other furniture, it had to be comfortable like antique furniture, and she wanted a celtic design engraved in the back. So we took her information, told her we would do some research, and give her a call soon. If you ever want to see some intricate small chairs look up spin chairs. Wow!

We gave her a quote and once she decided to move forward we took a drive to Port Townsend to a lumber mill and got to work. One of the things we researched was height. If Sam was going to spending hours spinning we wanted the seat to be a comfortable height as well as a comfy seat. Based on her leg measurements and the height of her treadle (fancy wheel term) we determined the final height of the chair. If you are going to have a custom chair built for you it should be tailored to fit YOU. While figuring this out was interesting I must say, the process of doing the seat was the most fascinating to do. There was a lot of math and time put into that seat but it is the most comfortable wood to sit on. With the help of a CNC the approved designs were brought to life. And presto changeo a beautiful one of a kind chair was made.
